GHG emissions and Energy Efficiency
Our subsidiary Caspian Services Group has taken early action, ahead of regulatory requirements, to understand and minimize its energy consumption and GHG emissions through the preparation of a GHG inventory and GHG management policy.

Caspian Services Group uses the industry standard SANGEATM accounting and reporting system (American Petroleum Institute) to inventory its GHG emissions. SANGEATM enables Caspian Services Group to effectively monitor is emissions profile, cut costs, minimize emissions, and to prepare annual GHG emissions reports.

Kazakhstan recently ratified the Kyoto Protocol; creating opportunities for economic benefits from reducing carbon emissions through Emissions Trading, Joint implementation, and the Clean Development Mechanism. Caspian Services Group is ready for any changes to GHG reporting, taxation, trading or quotas, and we are well positioned to receive credit for our early action.

Our 2008 GHG inventory indicated that Caspian Services Group:
  • Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (electricity and heat use) emissions increased by 113% from 2006 to 2008, as a result of the company’s growth and the addition of new vessels to its fleet;
  • Primary source of emissions is the combustion of diesel fuel in vessel engines, comprising 96% to 98% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions and 72% to 74% of all emissions;
  • Emissions intensity for Scope 1 and 2 emissions has decreased by 16% from 2006 to 2008 as the company has grown more efficient;
  • Emissions intensity was comparable to other, similarly carbon-intensive companies in the oil and gas industry.
